WAAPAAU, new photobook. / by Toni Ricart

I just published Waapaau, which means "white" in the Cree language.
In Waapaau, I use the omnipresent white in Canada's winter landscapes to explore this color through photography. The white of the snow becomes a passe-partout to be framed - as in a Japanese print - or an immense blank canvas to play with shapes, volumes, and the silence of non-white elements. Every branch, every trace, every distant figure takes on an identity in this luminous expanse.
I look for the nuances, the whites that demand to be named. It is through these fragments of silence that the white reveals its voice.
